Bait Builder Guide: How to Choose the Right Options

Whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned angler customizing your next killer combo, this guide breaks down each bait option so you can make confident choices that match your water, your style, and your target fish.

Shape – Choose the Right Profile

The shape of your bait determines how it moves in the water and what kind of forage it imitates. Our 2.7” Ned Worm is a finesse-style bait designed for tough conditions, cold water, post-front pressure, or heavily fished lakes, and is best used in the spring and fall slowly dragged or dead-sticked along the bottom. The 5” Worm is the most versatile option and can be Texas rigged, wacky rigged, or fished weightless for a natural fall, making it a great year-round choice, especially in summer or around docks and grass lines. The 7.5” Ribbon Tail Worm creates extra movement and vibration with its long curly tail, making it ideal for targeting bigger bass in warmer water, especially during summer nights or offshore fishing around ledges and brush piles. The 6” Bot Worm has a thicker body profile that displaces more water and gives off a stronger underwater presence, making it a great option for stained water, aggressive fish, or flipping heavy cover. Our 3” Paddle Tail is a swimming-style bait that mimics baitfish and works best in warmer water when fish are actively chasing, especially when rigged on a jig head or swimbait hook and reeled steadily. The 5” Minnow imitates larger baitfish and excels when bass are feeding on shad or open-water forage, making it effective on a jig head, underspin, or weightless setup during the summer and fall. The 1.75” Minnow Fry is a finesse-style bait built to imitate juvenile baitfish and shines in clear water or pressured fisheries where downsizing presentations are key, especially on a small jig head or drop shot rig. Lastly, the 3” Craw imitates crawfish, one of the primary food sources for bass, and performs best in the spring and fall around rocks or wood cover when used as a jig trailer or Texas rigged and hopped along the bottom.

Base Color – Match the Water Conditions

Choosing the right color comes down to water clarity, sunlight, and fish behavior. In clear water, natural and subtle colors work best. Options like Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Green, Watermelon Brown, Marine Blue, White, Pacific Sand, and Kiwi (which shifts from brown to green) look realistic and won’t spook wary fish. In stained water, which has a bit of color but still some visibility, bolder natural shades like Junebug, Purple Plum, Sour Grape, Cinnamon Brown, Dawn (a magenta hue), or Earthworm Blue strike a perfect balance between contrast and realism. For muddy water, visibility is low, so you’ll want to go bold with Black, Red, Chartreuse, Safety Orange, Strawberry, Jelly Red, or even Bubble Gum. These high-contrast colors help fish find your bait even in dirty water. As a general tip: bright, shimmering colors shine on sunny days, while darker solid colors work better when it’s cloudy or overcast.

    Glitter – Add Some Flash

Glitter enhances your bait by catching and reflecting light, mimicking fish scales or adding just the right amount of flash. We offer two sizes: 0.015” glitter, which is fine and subtle, best for clear water and finesse presentations, and 0.040” glitter, which is bigger and creates more flash, making it ideal for stained or muddy water or low-light situations like early morning, evening, or cloudy days. Color also matters. Silver, Gold, and Rainbow glitter are classic choices for imitating baitfish and work in nearly any water clarity. Red and Orange glitter pair well with craw baits and shine during spring. Purple, Light Blue, and Royal Blue are great for deeper water or low-light conditions, while Chartreuse, Pink, and White add pop in dirty or stained water. If you’re targeting spooky bass or fishing in ultra-clear lakes, no glitter might be the best call for a more natural presentation. You can include one glitter type with your bait for free and add more for just $0.50 each.

Pearl Powder – Add Shine & Depth

Pearl powder gives your bait a slick, shimmery finish that reacts to light and adds realism, especially when fish are relying on sight to find prey. Silver Pearl is perfect for baitfish-style colors like white, blue, or natural greens, and it works best in clear water and sunny conditions. If you're building a craw or dark-colored bait like Junebug, Purple Plum, or Grape, Purple Pearl gives it a subtle color shift that works especially well in deeper water or when the light is lower. If you're fishing in bright sun, high-pressure lakes, or clear visibility, adding pearl can help your bait look more lifelike and stand out just enough to trigger a bite.

    Scent – Trigger More Bites

Scent can be the difference between a bass just looking at your bait and one fully committing to eat it. We offer a variety of options to match your target species and water conditions. Banana, Grape, Strawberry, and Blackberry are sweet, fruity scents that work especially well in warm water or when fish are pressured and need something unique to hold their attention. Anise, which smells like black licorice, is a longtime favorite that seems to calm fish and increase strike chances, it’s a solid year-round option. For maximum strength and versatility, CCGX3 (a combo of Coffee, Nightcrawler, and Garlic) is great in almost any condition. BassSauce is our baitfish mimic scent with an extra punch, making it perfect for paddle tails and other baitfish imitators. If you're fishing craws or around rocky bottoms in spring or fall, MegaHawg (crawfish and shellfish blend) is a top pick. And TripleThreat, which combines leech, worm, and shad scents, covers a variety of natural forage and works great on all bait shapes. Stronger scents like Garlic and Coffee also help in muddy water, where visibility is low and scent becomes even more important.

Laminates, Tail Colors & Coreshots – Add More Custom Detail

Want to take your custom bait to the next level? Laminates, different color tails, and coreshots give your bait extra realism, contrast, and visibility that can make a big difference on pressured fish or changing water conditions. Laminated baits combine two colors split throughout the bait, creating a more natural look that closely imitates real forage like baitfish, bluegill, or crawfish. Popular laminate combinations like Green Pumpkin/Purple, Black/Blue, or Watermelon/Chartreuse give your bait depth and a realistic two-tone appearance that shines in clear to lightly stained water. Different color tails are another great option for adding a strike trigger without overpowering the bait. A Chartreuse, Orange, Blue, or Red tail can imitate feeding cues, injured prey, bluegill fins, or crawfish accents, helping bass key in on the bait more easily. Bright tails are especially effective in stained water, during the spawn, or anytime fish need a little extra visual target. Coreshots feature a separate color running through the center of the bait, creating a unique layered effect that adds depth, realism, and flash from every angle. These are especially effective in clear water and sunny conditions where fish get a longer look at the bait. Coreshots can imitate the natural belly or internal coloring of baitfish while also giving your soft plastic a premium custom appearance that stands out from standard one-color baits.

Putting It All Together – Practical Tips

If you’re new to bait customization, start by thinking about the season and what bass are likely feeding on. In early spring or fall, craws are key, so go with a 3” Craw, a natural or dark color like Red or Kiwi, Orange glitter, and MegaHawg scent. In summer, baitfish are the main target, so a Paddle Tail in White with Silver glitter, Silver Pearl, and BassSauce scent is a killer combo. On days with clear skies and clear water, natural colors with subtle glitter or pearl can help you match the hatch. But on cloudy days, in low-light conditions, or in stained/muddy water, go with bolder colors, stronger scents, and more flash.
